Titles 101. GET REAL!
Anyone viewing my work really doesn’t have to be aware of the picture’s title.
However, titles can enlighten and supply meaning when the actual painting may be lacking in subject detail. AND, I enjoy naming my paintings. It’s fun!
There are several avenues you can take when titling a picture. There’s the “stupid” series approach... “It’s a barn, stupid”, “It’s a vase, stupid”, you get the idea. That can be expanded to multiple items if it’s a really dense crowd. My 60 years in ad biz makes me suspect that this is not a good marketing ploy.
Now, for artist’s with a complete lack of imagination, there’s always “Untitled I”, “Untitled II”, etc. But then that presents a visual identity problem when asking someone to fetch that “untitled” painting. Still Life 282 doesn’t help either. “Where did I leave that painting of Mona whatz-her-name?”, works better.
So, if we artists must name paintings, why not make that a creative challenge, too? |
